Inis Meain for H. Stockton
Indigo-Dyed Heavy Linen Overshirt
Inis Meáin Knitting Company was founded in 1976 on the Aran island of the same name by Tarlach de Blácam and Áine Ní Chonghaile. The couple was inspired by the unique spirit, environment and heritage of the place and were determined to make it their home. Becoming involved in a series of development projects aimed at creating a sustainable community, their mission led to equipping a small factory with six knitting machines and teaching the younger residents the time-honored craft of Irish knitwear. Inis Meáin Knitting Company offered regular work in a factory setting, attracting young people who would otherwise have left the island forever.
Today, Inis Meáin Knitting Company continues to delve into the rich knitting heritage of the island for inspiration, reinterpreting traditional stitches and styles in the finest yarns to create beautiful and sophisticated garments for contemporary living. We are proud to launch our partnership with this incredible, community-oriented knitwear maker.
New for this season, Inis Meáin has expanded their collection to feature a nearly perfect companion garment for the mainstays they're known for - heavy linen shirts. While crafted in Italy instead of Ireland, this indigo-dyed cloth fits their aesthetic and penchant for gutsy fabrics perfectly; we've surely never seen a linen like this. The weight and gauzy weave of the fabric make this shirt a no-brainer for a warmer climate, getting plenty of wear as a layer in the Fall and Winter, while being perfectly at home throughout Spring and Summer. It works perfectly underneath a waxed cotton jacket or 60/40 parka, while easily mixing with a soft sportcoat and moleskin trouser for a refined-casual type of vibe.
We think this is one of those pieces that can take you nearly anywhere and it only gets better the more you wear it!
